Richard Bland, taking a break from his LIV Golf schedule to compete in his first senior major championship, made an impressive start by tying for the lead with Richard Green of Australia in the Senior PGA Championship. Bland carded a 7-under 64 to share the top spot at Harbor Shores in Michigan.
Green, who played in the morning, produced three birdies and an eagle on the par 5s to match Bland's score. Both players were two shots ahead of the defending champion Steve Stricker at the end of the first round.
Having earned a one-time exemption by winning the 2021 British Masters, Bland didn't expect to participate in the senior majors originally. However, he was able to take advantage of the exemption this year due to a scheduling conflict last year.
With his accurate tee shots and strong performance on the course, Bland showcased his skill and finished the day without a bogey until the final stretch. As one of the three players in their 50s on LIV Golf, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and hopes to make the most of it.
Green, on the other hand, had a quick start with an eagle on the fifth hole and continued to make birdies throughout the round. Stricker, despite facing some discomfort with the course layout, managed to post a solid score with seven birdies.
The competition remains tight with several players, including Mike Weir, K.J. Choi, and Vijay Singh, close behind the leaders. Bernhard Langer, still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, faced challenges but remains optimistic about his progress.
